A Rich Itinerary of Colours and Culture in Mexico!
There are a lot of things to do in Mexico. If we were to write it all down, we’d have a novel! However, we would like to highlight the not-to-miss places when you’re in the country! Aside from the unique foods which will dance your taste buds with bits of spicy and soury goodness, or the mariachi bands you’d hear lingering through the streets, we’d like you to see other incredible places to really enhance your experience!
Read below to see our recommendations for your trip to Mexico…
1. Hierve al Agua
This petrified waterfall is something that not many often look for or expect in Mexico. However, such a sight can be seen across 2 cliffs. One of the cliffs shows a waterfall as if it has been halted in time, whilst the other cliff features man-carved pools in the limestones. This area is the perfect spot for a quick cool dip or even for those travel photographs. And yes! The pools are surprisingly cold which makes for the perfect trip under the hot Mexican sun.
With this in mind, there isn’t a lot of shade in the area so be sure to bring a hat or scarf to keep your head shaded. Also, don’t forget your water bottle!
2. Lucha Libre
This is a must when you’re in Mexico! If you’re looking for unparalleled entertainment, definitely head out to a show. Lucha Libre is like the WWE of the U.S. if you were to add colourful masks to the show. Such shows are very popular amongst locals and tourists alike. It is not something you should miss if you want to get a variety of Mexico’s culture. Something else to look forward to are the food stalls with popular Mexican snacks and meals all around the stadium.
Keep in mind, the place is always crowded so be sure to keep your phone charged!
3. Chichén Itzá
One of the most popular ancient ruins lay here. When you do a quick google search of Mexico, this place would usually be a common image that pops up. This is one of UNESCO’s World Heritage sites and also names one of the new 7 Wonders of the World. Chichén Itzá was built by the Mayan people nearly 1000 years AD. It is known as the major focal point of the Northern Maya Lowlands and is believed to have been a place of pilgrimage for the Mayans. The history is rich in this area and brings you back to the pre-Colombian era of Mexico.
To truly enjoy the place, avoid the crowds by booking early access through reputable tour guides. Also, a full-day trip here would be ideal.
4. Teotihuacan
This is another very popular ancient ruin. It was known to have been the largest urban center of Mesoamerica before the Aztecs and one of the great cities in the Western Hemisphere back in its era. Only 30 miles north of Mexico City, this place is not something you should miss. You cannot really take in how incredibly difficult it must have been to build such astronomically large architectures back in its time. It is an experience you must encounter in person, really delve into the beautiful history of Mexico through these Teotihuacan pyramids.
You can easily spend a full day here and you should. Also, keep in mind, if you’re a photographer or videographer who is thinking about bringing your drone here, don’t. They are prohibited and you may risk getting your equipment confiscated.
5. Frida Kahlo
The dear Frida Kahlo! You really cannot visit Mexico without encountering an image or 2 of her! She is not only popular amongst the locals but she is a global icon! Born in 1907, Frida was known for her many self-portraits and artworks inspired by Mexican landscapes and artifacts. However, as she became more well-known, she become adored beyond her artistic. Her journey through her adversity is well-documented in her old home in Mexico City called, ‘The Blue House’.
This very vibrant and colourful house was actually hers but is now home to her many artworks and life history. You can see the stages of her life from when she first started painting, her divorce and her increasing disability. Definitely make a stop here, you would not regret it.
6. Folklore Ballet in Mexico City
Last but not least, head on out to see the Folklore Ballet. Experience the rich beauty and undying culture of Mexico through an unparalleled performance of dance and music! You can watch this show at either the Palace of Fine Arts or Castillo de Chapultepec. The performance explores the heritage of pre-Colombian and colonial Mexico. End your night with magic with their jaw-dropping performance, highlighting music and dances from across the country!
